Khan reserves praise for recently retired Haye

Amir Khan has praised David Haye who recently retired from boxing . The former heavyweight World Champion followed through on his promise to retire before the age of 31, thus ensuring he didn’t fight on when he was past his best.

Khan – who still has many years before he needs to think about retirement – says he respects Haye’s decision, even if there is still a bit of unfinished business  between him and the Klitschko brothers.

He said: “When you put your heart and your mind into something like he has, then you have to go with it. He knows his body better than anyone else and knows why he wants to walk away before he is 31.”

It has been rumoured that Haye could postpone his retirement if a fight with Vitali Klitschko is agreed of course and Khan believes that if this happens, the Englishman is more than capable of coming out on top.

Khan continued: I'm sure there will be a few more twists and turns in this story of Haye vs Klitschko. And there is no reason why Haye wouldn't emerge on top if there is ever a next time - whatever brother he fights.

"There is so much for Haye to be proud of despite the criticism he received after he dropped a points verdict to Wladimir in Germany.”

Another significant figure in British boxing, Ricky Hatton, would like to have seen Haye fight on though, saying that he still has the ability to prove some critics wrong.

The Hitman said: “David Haye should fight on to secure his legacy. He will be the first to admit he is better than his last performance against Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko. And I have a feeling in my water he might yet give it one last go.”

“For David, it was the night he came second to Klitschko and the manner of his defeat. That is why I believe Haye should fight on, to set the record straight - but I totally respect the decision he has come to.”

Haye appears to be sticking by his decision at the moment though, regardless of the pressure from the likes of Hatton to continue.
