Who will be the main man for England in the first T20 against New Zealand?

England and New Zealand go head-to-head in the first Twenty20 match of a three-match series on Saturday and as ever in this format of the game, it should be a cracking encounter.

Both of these sides can be superb in T20’s and with One Day Internationals and Test matches to come after this series, they will each be looking to build momentum.

One thing England do struggle to do in the shortest format of the game is building a big score and accumulating runs without losing wickets.

They need someone to really step up to the plate on Saturday, so who can that top batsman be?

Well, at the moment, Alex Hales is considered as the favourite at 7/2 with Ladbrokes.

Hales is likely to open the batting, which is probably the main reason for him being the most likely leading scorer.

However, he is also a superb hitter of the ball that has scored a lot of runs for England in T20’s in the past. If he bats for any amount of time, then you can be sure that the opener will get a big score.

Then, Luke Wright has a betting bonus of 4/1 and we all know what he is capable of when he gets his eye in. Wright can hit the ball a long, long way, but much might depend on what number he is put in.

Possibly the best value for money in this market though is Eoin Morgan as he is being offered at 5/1 with Boylesports.

Few would argue that he is the best T20 player England have at their disposal and his ability to play spin often means he scores plenty of runs in these matches.

It should be a fascinating contest and the likes of Jos Butler, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root are available between 7/1 and 8/1.

Who can be the top batsman for England in Rajkot?

England have now arrived in India for their five match One Day International series and it does have the makings of being a cracking battle between these two top-quality sides.

You might argue that the Three Lions are the team in better spirits right now after winning the Test series and drawing the T20’s in India in the latter parts of 2012. Also, the Indians recently lost 2-1 in an ODI battle with Pakistan, so have to bounce back.

As ever, the batting will be key and England have to get themselves used to these conditions once more.

So, which player can set the standard and be the leading scorer for the away side in the first match in Rajkot?

Captain Alastair Cook is currently being tipped as the favourite to be the top batsman with odds of 11/4 with Betfred.

If he can take his form from the Test matches into this shorter format of the game, then you would expect the opener to score plenty of runs.

Then, Kevin Pietersen is at 3/1 with Ladbrokes and the big-hitter really did show his value to the team in the Test series.

He is sure to feel as though he still has a point to prove though and as we know, when at his best, there are not many better in the world than KP.

Ian Bell is then a 7/2 shot and Eoin Morgan’s latest betting offer has him at 5/1. Both of these two have the quality to hit three figures in a ODI, but it all depends on how the top order perform and whether they get their chance to bat for a considerable amount of overs.

Craig Kieswetter could then represent good value to be the leading scorer in the first ODI as he is out at 12/1.

If England’s big name players perform, then they should take a 1-0 lead in Rajkot.
