TOPIC: England Are Blessed With Right Backs

England Are Blessed With Right Backs 25 May 2012 11:13 #1

I can’t remember a time when it has been near impossible to choose the best right back for an England squad, but Roy Hodgson certainly had a lot to think about for this summer’s Euro 2012 tournament.

In the past it has been Gary Neville who made the position his own for a good ten years or more, and since then, Glen Johnson has been the man at number 2 with the likes of Wes Brown popping up on occasion.

This season however has seen the emergence of four or five players who were all in with a shout of making the position their own, and would have jumped at the chance to help England to defy most Betfair Euro 2012 tips by winning the tournament.

It is Johnson who looks like being the winner, and his experience will be great for England, but he should count himself lucky that he has been selected at all.

Kyle Walker has been a sensation at Spurs this season and deservedly picked up the young player of the year award, and had it not been for an unfortunate toe injury that he suffered on the final day of the season, he would have surely been the man at right back this summer.

Chris Smalling has also made a name for himself for England and Man Untied this summer at right back and centre back and so he too would have been in with a shout of being selected had he not been ruled out through injury.

Then you look at another big surprise in the squad, which is the fact that Micah Richards, who has captained Premier League champions Manchester City this season, is nowhere to be seen. Micah has been solid and aggressive this season for the English title winner and it is a shock that his power and versatility has been overlooked.

Phil Jones is the other potential right back that could threaten Johnson’s place, though you would think that Johnson’s experience would give him the edge.

But in truth, there would be little arguments if any of these five great right backs were chosen as first choice, as England attempt to justify their favourable Betfair Euro 2012 Group D odds.
