Glorious Goodwood Day 1

Tuesday sees the opening day of the Glorious Goodwood, and we've looked at the runners and riders to pick out a few for your perusal.

The opening race could well prove to be the trickiest of the festival to predict. Mark Johnston is the most successful trainer in this one, having taken four victories in the last ten years, and this time round he has entered no fewer than four horses to try and take a fifth win.

Stars Over The Sea is certainly one to watch if the ground gets a touch softer, but with the going currently Good to Firm we're leaning more towards Fire Fighting. He looks very temptingly handicapped of an 8lbs lower mark than when he ran to third here last year, and his second place at York last time out makes him all the more appealing.

The best place to back him is at StanJames, at a very decent 9/1.

Later in the day, there are plenty of horses with a claim on the 15:45 but our eye is drawn a short way down the listings to Notarised. In a field with several other horses who love to race from the front he might struggle to reach the front, but there's no doubt that he loves this track and he loves to run.

Dropping 3lb will favour him enough to overlook some recent poor form, and the best place to back him is at BoyleSports, who have priced him at 8/1.

Finally, the 16:20 looks to be a big, fast sprint with some cracking horses lined up to try and make it first over the five furlongs. Thesme has strong claims, especially with Dettori onboard, but in such a big field big surprises can occur and we fancy opposing the favourite with a pick of our own.

We're torn between taking Blithe Spirit or Harry Hurricane, but we're leaning towards the latter. He's had a couple of bad races since his victory in York in May, but when things go his way he has bags of pace and it remains to be seen whether his full potential has yet been realised.

At 12/1 over at Coral we're willing to put him to the test on Tuesday.
